Security Series: Part 7 – Post-Incident Response and Recovery

No matter how many protections you put in place, incidents will happen. Attackers evolve, mistakes occur, and sooner or later your organization will face a security event. The difference between a small disruption and a major breach comes down to how you respond.

Imagine this. An employee clicks a phishing link, their account is flagged as risky, and the attacker manages to send out a wave of emails before IT intervenes. The immediate threat is contained, but what comes next is just as important.

Response in the moment

Quick actions make all the difference. Revoking sessions, resetting passwords, disabling accounts, or isolating a compromised device keeps the attacker from doing more damage. Having these steps predefined in a playbook ensures your team can act without hesitation.

Post-incident investigation

Once the immediate threat is handled, the focus shifts to understanding what really happened. Did the attacker access sensitive files? Were emails exfiltrated? Did they attempt lateral movement? A thorough audit answers these questions and provides the clarity needed to inform leadership and regulators if required.

Learning and improving

The final step is closing the loop. Every incident provides insight into what worked, what didn’t, and where controls can be improved. Maybe Conditional Access needs to be tightened, maybe endpoint compliance policies need to be enforced, or maybe phishing simulations should be expanded to raise user awareness. The point is to take lessons learned and make tomorrow’s defenses stronger.

At iKan, we help organizations build incident response plans that cover all three phases: immediate action, post-incident investigation, and continuous improvement. Because in cybersecurity, it’s not about whether an incident will happen - it’s about how well you respond when it does.
